Japanese whiskies worth knowing

Japanese whiskies worth knowing

North-Americans appreciate their scotch, whiskies and bourbons.

Which country comes to your mind first when you think of this spirit?

  • Ireland?
  • Scotland?
  • Canada?
  • United-States?
  • JAPAN?

Well, we bet that JAPAN was not one of your top 3 answers that came to your mind, was it?

Japanese whiskies are getting international attention as a japanese retailer, DEKANTA, has launched an online international campaign to offer the largest selection of rare and old japanese whiskies.

This comes shortly after a Japanese whisky (and yes, it seems that Japanese write it without an e) received the title of the best whisky in the world in 2015. ‘Indeed, the 2015 edition of Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible had named Suntory’s Yamazaki Single Malt Sherry Cask 2013 the best whisky in the world — the first time the honor has gone to a whisky from Japan.’

The only brand available at the SAQ or LCBO is NIKKA. This brand has won many awards since 2007. The story of its founders is romantic and very advanturous. Think back in 1920 without internet. (Read more on this story).

Although just one of our team members has yet tasted japanese whiskies (Togouchi and Nikka), we would like to share with you these labels that are quite different than the ones from the dominating countries in this spirit category.

Without pretending to share all of them with you, here are some products that range from 52$ to over 10 000$.
